The MTV RE:DEFINE art auction and gala rocked CenterPark Garden at NorthPark Center as the seventh iteration raised over $2.2 million, benefiting Dallas Contemporary and MTV Staying Alive Foundation.
Fashion and art coalesced perfectly at MTV RE:DEFINE, with stylish ensembles, decked out on every guest as they canvassed the silent auction artworks during the cocktail reception, which was held beneath the gigantic steel, wood and aluminium sculpture, “Five Hammering Men” by Jonathan Borofsky.
I decided to wear a candy pink A-line dress, Prada, a style from last season that was perfect for this occasion. Printed with a canvas painting of a woman on the front and back, and accessorised with pink embellished sequin and crystal pumps by Miu Miu. I felt like, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in my sparkly shoes, but with no desire to click my heels three times to go home. I was perfectly happy enjoying the grand finale and culmination of a yearlong effort—my second time chairing this glamorous gala.
Strutting on stage to George Michael’s song “Too Funky” with my lovely co-chair Brooke Davenport, we stood in front of our guests giving our “Thank-you” speech while the rain poured. Competing with the rain, I should have yelled, “don’t rain on my parade,” as the deluge cascaded over the clear tent. Fortunately, the downpour from the impending tornado threat only lasted about five minutes, but long enough to drown out my speech as I raised my voice into the microphone. So my very readable thank-you notes are now listed below – no rain here!
Hosted by The Goss-Michael Foundation, co-founder Kenny Goss and executive director Joyce Goss, with presenting sponsor NorthPark Center, this year’s event took on a new adaption. Set within a grand clear tent in the CenterPark Garden, with artist Leo Villareal’s 25-feet tall neon “Buckyball” sculpture as the evening’s backdrop, the attending five hundred guests glowed in swaths of neon colours all night long, quite apt given the gala’s honoree—the tent decor was a visual feast for the eyes.
Honouring British artist Tracey Emin, the first female artist to be awarded by MTV RE:DEFINE, Emin took the stage to accept her award, and standing between Kenny and Joyce, Emin graciously shared sentiments of gratitude as the audience listened in awe to this prolific contemporary artist.
In the audience, artists, Marc Quinn, Ian Davenport (who will exhibit at Dallas Contemporary in September), Kenny Scharf, Harvey B. Brown and David Scheinmann, along with Samantha McCurdy, Sara Rahbar, Ambreen Butt and Thomas Canto. Also in attendance, London-based fashion design Emilio Barba of Korchov Barba, who dressed Becca Dudley the evening’s emcee and Georgia Arnold, executive director of MTV Staying Alive Foundation. Attending from Los Angles as Ms Davenport’s guests, Eugenio Lopez owner of Colección Jumex, a private contemporary art collection, and interior designer Waldo Fernandez.
In addition to Emin’s neon, “It’s Different When You’re in Love”, 2016, with three gouache works from Emin’s personal collection, other notable works of art curated by Peter Doroshenko, executive director of Dallas Contemporary and Kenny Goss included donations from Marc Quinn, Ian Davenport, Francesco Clemente, Kenny Scharf, Nasher Prize Winner—Theaster Gates, Alicja Kwade, Katherine Bernhardt, Sarah Morris, Chloe Wise, Ashley Bickerton, Paola Pivi and Tom Sachs.
As guests finished their entree course, a delectable duo of sea bass and duck breast by Proper Catering, auctioneer Simon de Pury took centre stage at the podium, rallying the crowd with his commanding Swiss accent to a crescendo of flashing paddles throughout the tent. Totalling live auction bids, at $220k for Emin, a $220k for Marc Quinn’s, “Solar Eclipse Northern Hemisphere August 11th, 1999”, 2017, and $70k for Kenny Scharf’s, “Globzerino,” 2018.
Beautiful and breathtaking in every way, the musical performance by the captivating German-born, London-bred singer-songwriter Arlissa, added one more magical moment to the evening, singing her global viral hit “Hearts Ain’t Gonna Lie.”
