Everyone is seeing spots lately, with the recent collaboration between Cynthia Rowley and Olaf Breuning, and Louis Vuitton announcing its collaboration with dotty Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
True to form Marc Jacobs never fails to tantalize us with his unique fusion of contemporary artists at the House of Louis Vuitton—Stephen Sprouse, Richard Prince and Takashi Murakami, how could we forget! From graffiti, camouflage, and cherry blossom, to spots—the polka dot collection will include ready-to-wear, leather goods, accessories, shoes, watches and jewelry.
Kusama an artistic legend continues to expand her creative dottiness at the mere age of 82 years old, by adding fashion to her long list of varied artistic media, including paintings, collages, sculptures, film and performance art. Obsessed with polka dots her entire life, Kusama has lived voluntarily at a psychiatric institution to escape psychological trauma—her work is an expression of sharing her experiences.
Next month the Tate Modern in London will debut the largest retrospective of the artists work through June, which will then arrive at the Whitney Museum in New York, from July through September. Whether it’s London or New York, a visit to see this exhibition is on my to-do list this summer.
Vuitton will debut the Kusama collaboration at boutiques in July, showcased in special window installations—I think this is spot on!
