Tobias, Adaline, Sammi, Hechi and Perla are purrfect models and the stars of Stella McCartney’s lookbook for the Autumn 2016 collection. The cats were not personally invited to attend a private lunch in honour of Stella McCartney at Neiman Marcus NorthPark last week, but knowing cats they probably had better things to do.
Helmut Lang: I’m not talking about the fashion brand that you find racked at Neiman Marcus, the eponymous designer departed his namesake label back in 2005 after selling it to the Prada Group, I’m talking about Helmut Lang the artist. Fast forward 10+ years since selling his business Mr Lang has quietly and patiently been creating sculptures in his East Hampton studio, and in February, I had the opportunity to meet with Mr Lang at his home and tour his studio.
New York, London, Milan, Paris: I haven’t attended New York fashion week in a couple of years now. But that’s ok, since the entire experience of schlepping between the shows and waiting, and waiting, can be quite cumbersome and less than glamorous, but, of course, the real-life experience of the 20-minute runway show does make up for the wait. However, these days it’s much easier to flick through every ready-to-wear runway shot of Autumn Winter 2016 on my iPad at the speed of lightening and edit directly to Pinterest. At the end of a month-long clicking frenzy, a multi-city fashion story is revealed.
Eleven years later I finally return to the très chic French island of Saint-Barthélemy—St. Barth. The first trip, a sailing celebration for New Year’s Eve introduced me to the fact that I was not destined to become a worldly sailor. In 2004, my husband and I sailed from St. Martin to St. Barth in 10ft swells (I gripped any protruding handle that I could find on the 55ft sloop and held on dearly at a 45-degree angle), and I arrived at Gustavia dock a perfect shade of green, our captain, however, looked like a happy present-day pirate. I decided that the next trip to St. Barth I would keep my feet firmly on the ground. So this January started with a winter getaway to the Caribbean sans a sailing yacht.
The fifteen-minute flight from St. Martin’s Princess Juliana Airport to St Barth, via Windward Island Airways, (WinAir) provides an exhilarating landing, not for the faint-hearted. Once I recovered from the Twin Otter’s dramatic descent, I remembered that the less than 10-mile square island is super-small, and small cars make the best transportation—the Mini Cooper convertible we rented was a perfect island shade of pale blue.
So imagine walking into the mind of Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, and peeking blissfully at his eclectic musings of fashion and art—symbolically mesmerizing, and collectively vibrant and creative. Well, a trip to the City of Lights might satiate said pondering.
Spring 2014 runways produced an abundant kaleidoscope of colour, with monochromatic canvases of black and white, and serious flirtations and conversations where art popped profusely. Time to reminisce over last September’s runway stories and get that must-have spring shopping list ready. This season, have fun, get colourful, and get inspired by art.
