Beauty: For one long luxurious hour, I had the infinite pleasure of sitting tête-tête with Clive Christian over coffee at the Four Seasons in Las Colinas. And who is Mr Christian one might ask? Not only did he create the concept of designing exquisite kitchens with chandeliers as the focal point under his Clive Christian Interiors brand, but he is also the purveyor of the world’s most expensive perfumes.
In Dallas to attend the Neiman Marcus beauty conclave, Mr Christian dressed in all black—his signature style, from turtleneck attire to sharp black eye frames. With a proper British accent, our conversation evolved from sharing personal anecdotes of life in the motherland, our love for America and of course his incredible success in the luxury industry. The man is a business marketing genius and a modest one at that. In 2012, he was announced as a recipient on the Queen’s New Year’s Eve Honours List for his contributions as a designer to the British Luxury Goods industry—honoured as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).
The reason for his visit, to announce the launch of his latest product, the Clive Christian Limited Edition Original Collection Twist, perfumes paired in a box each numbered and certified attesting authenticity and provenance, the 1872 Mandarin and the 1872 Vetiver. A modern take on the classic perfume collection, the 1872 Mandarin, with top notes of bergamot and tangerine oils and rare Rose de Mai now includes a twist of Sicilian mandarin oil for a smooth citrus scent. The 1872 Vetiver, with top notes of petitgrain and spices, now features a full-bodied twist of vetiver from Madagascar creating added warmth, enhanced by the base notes of cedar wood, amber and patchouli.
All Clive Christian perfume collections are pure, no Eau de Toilette, no Eau de Parfum, using only the purest ingredients, as Clive shared, “it’s about the concentration and the complexity.” But the added twist apparently isn’t just about the perfect pairing of scents, “It’s all in the twist,” enthused Clive, as he demonstrated the concept of spraying each scent on his wrist and then gently rubbing his wrists together—mixing both twists in a perfect symbiotic scent.
These new twists, each in 50 ml bottles, adorned with the iconic gold crown stopper are available exclusively at Neiman Marcus, price $340.
As we departed, he charmingly said, “Max, you’re one class act,” I beamed, and I was thinking the same about him. Clive Christian.
